PNC Bank Building

PNC Bank Building is a five-story office building built in 1972 featuring an exterior facade comprised of granite panels and an aluminum- framed strip window system at each floor. A contractor performing sealant repairs reported that several granite facade panels had shifted during sealant removal operations, raising concerns regarding the support conditions and overall facade stability.

RRJ was retained by the property manager to investigate the displacement of the granite facade panels and the condition of the supporting hardware, as well as to develop designs and construction documents. RRJ conducted a visual condition survey, removed selected panels to observe concealed supports, and coordinated testing of the stone anchorage system. Original design and shop drawings were reviewed by RRJ to understand the construction and installation of the granite panels.

RRJ’s investigation concluded that numerous issues were present, including deterioration and disengagement of anchors, as well as rotation and/or separation of the adhesively bonded liner blocks. RRJ recommended repair of all column and spandrel panels on the building and provided construction administration services during the two-year repair process.
