The application of NDT can be used on both new and aging structures. NDT typically is used for quality control measures to evaluate construction or materials for new structures, and to assist in evaluating the structural integrity or adequacy of existing structures.

Proper planning and communication between investigators and NDT specialists is imperative throughout the planning, execution, and follow-up phases of an NDE program to maximize the advantages gained by deploying NDT on the investigative results.
