Iowa State University Larch and Willow Residence Halls

Completed in 1970, both residence hall structures consist of eight floors of dormitory rooms, common areas, with ground floor and mezzanine level.  RRJ was retained to evaluate moisture problems and condensation on the interior of some student dormitory rooms during cold weather after attempts to fix the problem by replacing fan coil units and window systems failed.  RRJ’s findings demonstrated that the combination of heat loss through the as-built construction and the indoor moisture levels contributed to localized moisture problems.

Scope of Services

  • Evaluate the moisture problems and condensation
  • Conduct document review
  • Meet with structural engineer
  • Analyze interior and exterior environmental conditions
  • Conduct thermal modeling of typical wall sections
