East Monroe Drive Parking Garage

The garage is a two-story underground concrete structure utilizing a cast-in-place concrete flat slab design.  The design planned for a maximum of five feet of soil fill on the roof level.  A portion of the garage roof collapsed while the garage was under construction, and after workers were on site placing soil fill in the area of the collapse.  The contractor retained RRJ to investigate the cause of the collapse.  All available evidence indicated design deficiencies were the cause of the collapse and that the major cause was improper design use of bent truss reinforcing bars used to reinforce upturned slab panels.
